SpID Consultation for Whittle-le-Woods

SpID Consultation for Whittle-le-Woods

23rd of June, 2023

WHITTLE LE WOODS PARISH COUNCIL
Speed Indicator Device (SpID)Consultation

Introduction
Whittle-le-Woods Parish Council is investing in community Speed Indicator Devices (SpIDs) which will be installed in varying locations within the Parish.

A SpID is not a speed camera: its purpose is to alert approaching drivers, motor cyclists and cyclists to their speed in order to remind them of their speed and, if they are exceeding the speed limit, advising them to slow down and remain within the speed limit.

It also provides valuable data such as traffic volumes, average speeds and maximum speeds; although it does not identify individual vehicles or record vehicle registration numbers; the data does, however, provide information which will be used to assess areas of particular concern.

The Scheme
The scheme involves the permanent installation of galvanised steel posts, complete with mounting brackets at each of eight locations.  SpIDs will be mounted on four of the posts, and will be moved periodically by Lancs County Council Highways Department to gain the most advantageous positions over the course of a year.

The roads covered by SpIDs are subject to a 20mph or 40mph speed limit.  The locations of the four SpIDs will be selected where it is known that a relatively high proportion of vehicles exceed the speed limit. By periodically placing the SpiDs at these locations it is hoped that it will help to remind drivers of the speed limit and to calm traffic.

The eight proposed locations are:

  1. LADYCROSSE DRIVE JUNCTION Lady Crosse WITH TOWN LANE
  2. OUTSIDE 11 CHORLEY OLD ROAD facing North Bound
  3. OUTSIDE 6 SHAW BROW, ORCHARD COTTAGE
  4. OPPOSITE LANGDALE GROVE POINTING WEST BOUND
  5. AT GABLE SIDE OF 138 CHORLEY OLD ROAD, JUNCTION WITH HILL TOP LANE
  6. DAWSON LANE JUST BEFORE THE COTTAGES POINTING IN EITHER DIRECTION
  7. ADJACENT TO GARAGE OF 1 CHORLEY OLD ROAD FACING EASTERLY

There will possibly be a further SpID post located on Chorley Old Road

These are the locations of the posts; the SpIDs will be mounted on four of them and will be moved periodically depending on the results of the traffic monitoring.

The details of each proposted SpID post can be found under the shared documents tab: SpID Location details

The Consultation will be open until the 31st July 2023.
